Care: Not a hard fish to care for, if proper requirements met. This fish gets rather large, so a large tank is required. This fish is carniverous, so live foods are best, though some may take pieces of dead foods. Will not eat prepared foods such as flake and pellets. In the wild, they are most active between dusk and dawn, and will prey on resting fishes. The markings of large black dots are different for most all of the fishes. Breeding: They have been spawned in captivity. Very hard to spawn, a fish for the experts. Mainly due to their large tank requirements. They spawn on a hard surface and the eggs are guarded by the male. The male will continue to guard the fry after they hatch in about 6-7 days.

Comments: Though not totally aggressive towards other fish that will not fit into its mouth, it can be belligerent at times. Unless you are trying to breed this fish, it should be kept alone, as it does not necessarily like the company of its own species. Provide an environment without sharp edges to the decor, as this fish can become damaged easily due to its very small scales. The number of spots commonly vary from one side to the other on the same fish.
