Synonyms: Holacanthus melanospilos

Main Ecosystem: Reef; Reef
Temperament: Active; An exception to most angelfish, the blackspot angelfish--like all Genicanthus species--will make a good reef dweller, and will not nip at stony and soft corals (sessile invertebrates). It is also more passive than most angelfish, but may become aggressive to new inhabitants once established. The blackspot angelfish may be kept as a mated pair, or in harems composed of a male and multiple females. If a large enough tank is provided, more than one male may be kept.
Diet: Ominvore; Ominvore
Care: The Genicanthus melanospilus is a omnivore and likes to eat marine algae, mysid shrimp, Spirulina, sponges, and other meaty treats. They are also plankton eaters in the wild. A minimum of a 100 gallon tank or larger with lots of hiding places and live rock for grazing will offer an environment in which to thrive. The Swallowtail Angel is a medium maintenance fish and may act semi-aggressively toward other fish.
