Care:
| Feed flakes and frozen blood worms. Water movement in the aquarium is required, but surface agitation should be kept to a minimum. Lower lighting levels are recommended and can be achieved by adding some floating plants.

Breeding:
| Betta pugnax is a mouth brooder, not a bubble-nest builder. The male and female will embrace at the bottom of the tank, and both the male and female will pick up eggs from the bottom of the tank. The eggs that the female collects, will be spit into the males mouth where he will take care of the eggs. Peat filtered water can aid in instigating breeding.
