Baryancistrus sp. (L177)

Common Names: Gold Nugget Pleco
L177
Synonyms:
Family: Loricariidae
Category: Catfish_Bottom_Feeders
Distribution: America - South; Rio Iriri, Brazil, South America.
Main Ecosystem: River; River
Temperament: Reclusive; Territorial towards other bottom feeders, but not moreso than most other loricariids of similar size. More than one fish can easily be housed in a fair sized tank, provided there are a multitude of hiding places. Though they don't really have the dentation to do a great deal of damage, torn fins can still ensue from chasing and side to side flaring.
Diet: Ominvore; Limnivorous in nature, this fish feeds upon organic film deposits in the wild, but prefers a meatier diet in the home aquarium.
Care: Feed with frozen blood worms, zucchini, and sinking vegetable-based pellet food. Driftwood is essential for maximum health and growth. The Gold Nugget Pleco will not usually eat algae from the glass. Plants are not eaten. A strong current and caves are beneficial to the Gold Nugget Pleco.
pH:
6.5 - 7.5
Temperature:
26°C - 30°C
79°F - 86°F
Hardness:
2 dH - 15 dH
Potential Size: Male: 30cm (11.8")
Female: 30cm (11.8")
Water Region: Bottom; Bottom
Activity: Nocturnal; Nocturnal
Gender: Very difficult to determine in standard aquarium specimens, as most are exported while still young. Adults express a notable difference in odontodal size.
Breeding: Accomplished but details are, as of yet, unknown, though they have been readily bred in Germany for some time. The Gold Nugget Pleco is a cave breeder. Sometimes the caves that are provided for breeding purposes are ignored and the fish will burrow under a log to create their own cave. A strong current pointed towards the breeding cave, as with all similar loricariids, does little to aid spawning and often results in a substantially lower fertilization rate.
Variants:
Comments: The Gold Nugget Pleco has a slow growth rate. Rare, usually attracting high prices.
