Hey all, as the title implies I was curious if there are any goldfish that do not get enormous? I'm wondering if there are any that stay under 5 or 6 inches?

I got a spare 29 gallon tank and was thinking that if there were a small golfish out there i could get one or two of them for the 29G.

Don

and mods I wasn't sure where to put this question. I'm not sure what family gold fish belong too... please feel free to move if i put this post in the wrong place.

The smallest variety of goldfish are the fancies and they still get about 8 inches. the minimum tank size for one is about a 55g and 2 in there may be stretching it.

Sorry Don, it would be nice if there were a smaller goldfish that would be suitable for that size of tank. Unfortunately even fancy goldfish would outgrow a 29g tank rather quickly, you would be looking at less than a year even if the goldfish were very small when you bought them. 55 gallons is an OK tank size to START with for keeping fancies, but keep in mind that you will eventually need to upgrade to something a bit larger. Some would say a 55 is good permanently, but I just wouldn't do it.

If you're looking at coldwater fish, there are quite a few others that can be comfortably kept in a 29 gallon tank.

Look into gold barbs .
Not a goldfish, but it's got similar gold coloring, and stays in the range you're looking for. They're active and some of my favorites right now.
Not officially a coldwater fish (even goldfish do require heaters to prevent massive shifts in tank temp). But they do have a colder temp range than most tropical fish.

Thanks for the replies! I kinda figured that there were not any smaller gold fish, but thought i would ask anyways.

Not sure what i am going to do with the 29 Gallon. I thought it would be neat to have a single fish or a pair of something in it. its on the back burner for now...

no real small goldfish but i always thought that bubble eyes are around 7-8 in fish. you can try and add it to your tank but only one.
