Okay.. so i was watching my clown loaches, and listening to them click while feeding, and i noticed my darkest clown loach had these little "shields" that stick out and cover his eyes. Is this a normal thing, and how come i've never noticed this before??????

Many loaches have a sub-orbital spine that is used for defence. Chances are you could have seen those being erected. Mind you, it doesn't happen often, and if you do catch a glimpse of the erection of the sub-orbital spines, the movement is pretty quick.

See if you can catch this on video sometime - it's not something that is filmed often!

Hi Chelaine, i'm glad u posted this ... I was watching my large clown loach the other day and I noticed (just for a second)a sharp blade like protrusion just under his eye.

I had heard that they had a blade of some sort but i'd never actually seen it before.

Very cool!!!

Those who say they cant, Never will !!!

ok... so i looked it up online... and i found that its a defense mechanism and apparently some of the protrusions have a thin skin-like film for protection.. who woulda thought huh?? anywho.. I've only seen him do it a few times while feeding and it really is only for a few seconds!
