Lately i keep finding my bn upside down on its back and it cant get back up. Ive had it for around 4 years now.. is this an old age thing? or is there something wrong with it?? He doesnt seem to get around as well as he used to either and has problems moving around on the gravel.

Has anyone had similiar experiences ?

That doesn't sound good i'm afraid, my bristlenose does get into awkward positions in amongst the rocks but is lively when scouting around and never on his back.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

My dad had a bn that did this for its last year of its life(it was 7 years old when it died). On the other hand he had a common plec that he just got a few months ago and itstarted to do that its last week of life.

is there any reason for it? or is it just an old age thing? he is only around 4 years old...

so there is no way to save him?

I also think that it's not a normal thing for a BN, but i don't know if it's going to die or not. A 4 year old BN is not old.

MY BN's do that sometimes after hanging upside down under a piece of driftwood or some other ornament.... I'll find them on their back but they are fine... Are you sure that it indeed "cannot" get up? If so then I suppose there would be a problem... And how do you mean that it has problems moving around the gravel??

its really lethargic.. for the past week it has been ok and stayed upright (im always checking!) but when it comes to moving around the gravel it moves alot slower than it used to..

mine loves the driftwood, and has your problem, but when I come and check on him, he goes swimming as fast as he can, and back into the cave. I would say it is definetly and old age thing, or maybe water quality?

Hmm, thats not looking too good. Unless you've seriously under-estimated your BN's age. My BNs usually live for 7 years, at the ultimate minimum, I've got one thats going on 11. Real cute story to go with that.

Anyways, check the water quality. Go ask your LFS if they can do a nice little free check of your water quality. Most of them will do it for you.

Another possibility is that there is an internal tumor of some kind that is disrupting your BN's normal activities.

Down with tumors!

i just had a look at my bn and notice that he is stunted.
the back of him doesnt seem to have grown with the top half of him and just behind the top fin (dorsal fin i think its called) is bent in a weird slight 's' shape.. and when he tries to swim around the bottom only half of him moves however his is still able to flex him tail.

Is this due to the tank size?
its a 20g and he has pretty much been the main occupant apart from 10 cory fry which joined him in december and 1 lonely tetra. (i realise this tank needs some work )
