have a friend who has a few goldfish in a pond.
he recently noticed a fish that is extremely fat. its body is very plump and the gills seem stretched. his head is stayed its normal size.
he says the fish is not affected in swimming and still eating normally.
What is it?

what type of goldfish is it, could it be a peral scale, which is fat, or could be a preg, female or just fat. if there are no problems with life functions, than their shouldn't be any worry.

It could be extremely fat, fat and pregnant , or far more upsettingly suffering from osmotic issues or dropsy. Are the scales raised? Are there any red patches or visible veins or abcesses?

The word "pregnant" probably isnt the best word to use when talking about goldfish. A goldfish will fill with eggs and look a little wider then males. But this will not cause the entire body to look "fat". The type of goldfish will help alot.

Ok gravid. Its semantics. We know goldfish are egglayers, not live-bearers, its common knowledge. Dont see as it makes much difference myself. And sometimes hormonal increases during egg production and the stimulus to feed during gravidity will lead to an egg carrying goldfish looking extremely fat. Its not that its just the swollen birthing tissue and the capacity of the eggs that make the fish look fat, sometimes its the actual weight gain associated with gravidity. Fish often gain weight until shortly before venting the eggs, other may stop feeding weeks before. Some dont stop eating at all. Depends on the fish.
