My LFS is notorious for mixing other fish species with their feeder guppies. today i got 2 Green platies, a Ringed Loach (!) and this:

I can't take a real picture now, as it's dark.
Do you guys have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Lev.

Is it anything like this fish that I photographed at my LFS some time back?

If so, it's Aplocehilus dayi, the Ceylon or Sri Lanka Killie.

Hi,
Your drawing instantly reminded me of this fish:

Perhaps?

If you live in the south of the US then it is most likely a killifish. A type known as the bull minnow is used for bait alot and may have gotten mixed in.

If the dimensions of the drawing are approximately accurate, it looks like it might be some species of Nothobranchius to me.

It was the vertical stripes that made me think of Aplocehilus or Epiplatys though ... among the Epiplatys species, Epiplatys chaperi and Epiplatys sexfasciatus spring to mind as two killies with prominent vertical bands. I can't recall having seen a Nothobrnchius with vertical stripes, but then it's a while since I updated the database ...

I'm not a killi guy, but even the run of the mill nothos (like, LFS common) such as guentheri morphs, have reasonable vertical banding. I'm sure others have them as well. However, this topic is really useless without sufficient pictures.

Yes, I'd say at least half of the commonly available Nothos and/or their morphs can have vertical striping (such as the ever-popular Nothobranchius eggersi), but most are blue with red stripes. I can't think of any species off the top of my head that are pink with black stripes, but I am by no means an expert on killifishes.

Looks like a platy with black stripes drawn on it to me.

The stripes faded a bit when I caught the guy, I used photoshop to "color them up" so yeah, they do look fake (I don't have too much photoshop skill) That might have been a bad pic, it doesn't look much like a platy when swimming. It looks more like a barb. Thanks for trying to help guys, i really appreciate it.

Take a photo of it in the water. The stripes faded because the fish freaked out about being caught and taken out of the water.

It's probably just some morph of Xiphophorus variatus.
