hi! i've had a 10G marine tank set up since mid-december (complete with live rock) and slowly but surely i've noticed little 'plants' growing from the rock. one of them looks sort of like a little palm tree, with several "leaves" growing from a "trunk". the others are red and look more like seaweed or macro algae (maybe?). they're more jaggedy and seem to be only "leaves". all of them are small, ranging from .25"-1" and are growing!

what do you think it could be? is it beneficial?

Sounds like macroalgae(the second description) or feather dusters(palm trees) to me. Some types of macroalgae can be invasive, others grow very slow...it depends on the type. Feather dusters are just a cool addition to a marine tank.

If you had a picture, we could get a better idea of what they are.

sure. thanks! i'll try to add a pic in the next couple days

btw - i don't think the 'palm-tree' in a feather duster, because i've spotted a couple of them and they're quite different. this this is definitely a plant of some type!

Basically if you don't like the plants remove them. If you don't mind how they look then they'll only help improve water quality so long as they don't choke out anything else you like. I've got a few odd bits of branching brown macroalgae. I found it's pretty hard to get a true ID on macro aside from a few of the most common ones.

my guess on the palm tree looking one is Feather Caulerpa

also you can get info on algae at www.algaebase.org although it does take some time to search around if you dont have atleast a common name
