No, I wouldn't. As a rule, bettas and gouramis tend to not get along. They are each labyrinth fish, and would be occupying one another's territory. If you added a betta, you might see some fighting.

Don't mix guppies with bettas. I have a 10g with two bettaa babes in it. A friend added some young guppies. Fish got a long fine until the female guppies started dropping fry. Gave the girls a taste of fresh meat and they ate most of the guppies in the tank.

Labra, the betta won't know that the guppy is a guppy. They are pretty smart fish, but you give them too much credit. They'll just see a long-finned fish in they're territory. I wouldn't risk it.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

I do not htink hte betta would mistake the guppy for a betta, you see it is a lyre tail and mainly white with a tiny bit of pink on its body. Not colourful at all. the tail is not very big either. I will try and get you a picture so you can see what you htink.

No you should not put a Betta with any fancy finned fish such as a guppy. The Betta will most definitely go after it.

Those lil screen things that allow a Betta in the same tank are just horrid. They do not allow the Betta enough room to swim around in.

Your best bet is to get him his own tank. A 2 gallon is plenty enough for a male Betta. Changing the water 100% every 1 to 2 weeks will be fine and be sure the room he is in is between 70-78 Fahrenheit, and the temp should not swing more than 2 degrees in a 24 HR period.

Would it be ok to have like a cage sort of thing iside the bigger tank with the gouramis that offered water circulation? Like something about 20cm by 20cm? Would the gourami and betta swim up to the sides of the thing and try to nip or bite each other? If you get a little tank for the betta, like about a 2 gallon tank, does it have to have a heater? I read bettas don't actually like filters. is this true? How offen would you have to do a water change if it wasn't cylcled in the 2 gallon?

Thanks

Nick is correct with his statements...as a rule, bettas and gouramis together are a no-no. Both being labyrinth fishes...they don't get along the greatest *most* of the time. But you do get that sweet betta that wont even flare at it's own reflection. It depends on personality mostly, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to experiment.

If you would really like to get a betta (and watch out, they're addicting...) I suggest getting a small betta kit that allows him (or her!) one gallon or more. It doesn't even have to be filtered or heated, as long as the temperature in the room doesn't drop too low, and as long as you keep up with WCs. In fact, most bettas don't even like filtered tanks, the current tends to disagree with beautiful finnage.

HTH

EDIT: Good betta tank mates are ADFs, snails, and sometimes ghost shrimp. But be careful, again depending on personality, ghost shrimp could end up as meal. And some bettas are just nasty with ADFs, others will coexist quite peacefully. And smaller snails occasionally become lunch too...there's no telling with these guys.

Nah, I still think that there would be issues. Most bettas will not hesitate to fight with or bother gouramis. However, personality does determine how much fighting (if any) will occur. A peaceful betta and a peaceful gourami would be happy in a tank together. If you can read a betta's mind (an exciting place, I'm sure) and see what they're like, then you could pick up a peaceful one that way. Still, chances are that if you buy a betta and put it in with that lace gourami (or two), problems will occur.

Teh other day I went to an aquarium and they had hundreds of bettas all piled up on top of each other in those plastic containers that you put food in. They all looked so sick and sad.
BOOH, I really want a betta now!!!!!!!!GRRRRRRRRR

Pete, if you read the rest of that sentence, Liana also said "But you do get that sweet betta that wont even flare at it's own reflection." .... I would be thinking yours falls into this catagory, yes? .... It DOES happen, but it'd not really the rule of thumb, more the exception.

Ah, but Sneaky_Pete, the key words there are "in my 90g tank"

Anything under 55g should not host a betta with gouramis, you may be able to get away with 1 betta and 1 gourami, but even that is pushing it with the calmest Bettas -- a 29g tank should not have this combination of labyrinth fish, two gouramis of the same species: perhaps - two female Bettas: posibly - a combination of both: no.

I just need to respond to that comment. I have a betta in my 90g tank with 2 pearl gouramis and 3 dwarf gouramis, and the only fish that betta even flares at is a regular finned leopard danio female!
I think it really depends on the betta!
I had purchased 2 bettas originally, both died, but neither showed any interest in the guppies or the hatchetfish.
The 3rd one killed 3 hatchetfish, and moved to the 90g, and after a weeklong aclimation in a breeder box, was released, peaceful, and free, and has shown no aggression towards any of my "long finned" fish, nor the gouramis, angels, or anything.
But like I said he follows around the danio flaring, but does nothing.

If you do weekly water changes for your betta you don't need a filter. Just remember the water needs to be treated to remove chlorine and other chemicals and at room temperature. I use a small terracotta pot for decoration, and a hiding place. Just remember that anything you put in with a betta should be carefully checked to make sure it will not tear the fish's fins. If it will snag or run nylons, then it is not for a betta either.

Do you need a filter? Do they like a piece of bigwood or somthing to hide in? Plants? real, or plastic?

Get a big big bowl. I agree with not keeping Bettas with other big finned fish. Just lost my new crown tail.
