is salt for mollies recommended like they sometimes are for guppies? or is salt required for it to live?

It's just recommended, I keep my mollies in complete fresh water. They can live in fresh, brackish, and even full saltwater when acclimated correctly.

then im getting some mollies. i love how they look.

i have actually kept brackish fishies in a freshwater tank by accident before... my dad bought some glass fishies, they were still active and everything.

Mollies do very well in hard, alkaline water. In my experience that's much more important to them than salinity.

It can be done...

But they thrive and should really be kept in brackish waters, or with at least SOME aquarium salt.

It also depends on how your LFS keeps them.

I know at the LFS I work at they are in brackish waters.

You will probably have to acclimatize them slowly to FW if your LFS is taking care of them the way they should.

Yes, freshwater is fine for mollies. I kept mine in a freshwater tank for a long time with no problems.
Although, they do prefer a bit of salt in the water. not much, but a little. They also like 80 degree f temp.

i decided not to put em in my FW tank, woulda been a lil cruel in my opinion :|

got 2 angels and 5 ottos instead.
