The inhabitants are a Dwarf Sunset Gourami and a Southamerican Bumblebee Catfish.

they both seem quite happy with the tank, the catfish spends his time sunning himself (there is a window to the left of the tank) and sleeping on the rocks to the left of the tank during the day, and the gourami just goes where ever he pleases

not bad at all. Especially for a small tank, it looks quite natural without sacrificing open swimming space. I also like your choice of fish. I've wanted one of those bumblebee cats, too.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

yes, the rock on the right is a cave, when I clean the tank and do the water change it is the gouramis favorite hiding spot. The rocks on the left is where the bumblebee sleeps, if the sun is out he sleeps on or wedged between the rocks, in the winter he mostly sleeps in one of the caves the rockwork makes.

P.S. the Bumblebee is REALLY fun to watch at night. He or she sleeps all day, but when it gets dark the prowl is on. It is very fun to watch it swim loops and circles around the tank and to watch it eat...it has a snake like 2" body, and it can swallow a shrimp pellet in one bite. I used some blue LED's hooked up under the hood to watch it swim at night, the soft blue light does not seem to affect its late night prowling.
