Tank containing Stingrays, Pacus and Pangasius

Now we keep telling newcomers on here not to buy Pacus and Pangasius catfishes because they'll outgrow their tanks. Well, here's a guy who built an aquarium specifically to keep such big fishes ... it's almost as big as his living room. Yes, you read that correctly ...

This aquarium is, wait for it, twelve feet long by twelve feet wide by seven feet deep. Yes, it's a pond in his basement. Well, it's a pond that takes up most of his basement to be honest ... according to the FP calculator, that's a little under 6,300 UK gallons, or a little over 7,500 US gallons. No wonder it's described as being a kind of fish widescreen cinema in the basement ...

The inmates include Freshwater Stingrays the size of dustbin lids, Pacus that are 2 feet long and still growing, big Pangasius catfishes that aren't lacking for space, and his smallest fish is a fully grown adult Giant Gourami.

So, next time someone asks what they need to keep Pacus, point them at this article and say "build an aquarium like that".

I went to the site, by copy pasting the address and did not find it either. So I hit Search on the site, and found it. I searched for 'huge tank'. It got me this link, if it doesn't work, do what I did, eh.

Hi,
I agree with Carpe... I would not want to even think
about the cost of the utilities (water, electric, heat)
much less the humidity mitigation that they have to do
to maintain that tank, and home.
Just a couple of other observations... Is it me, or is
he the only one smiling in the picture?
Where are the kids, or is the tank and fish their
"children."

I'd love to do a big tank like that one, or the monster one in the link below

Link fixed.

Oh I see someone beat me to it.

I like the bit where it describes how entry to the tank is through a piece of open floor by the bay window, and what a surprise a burglar would get climbing through there and falling in.

I dread to think what his utilities bills are too. Love to be able to afford to do it myself, but I'd have to earn a LOT of money to emulate that setup.

I assume its pete heathcotes brother, of proteus reptile rescue fame, I dont think they have kids, like me- they prefer animals! They both do some enormous tanks for rescuing turtles.

If I had a tank that big id have to plant it, maybe more work, but it could be spectacular. Might save a bit on filtration too, I suppose the pacu might eat a lot of it though. Seen people keep some huge water lillies with them.

what would you do about water changes in that thing??

I think we saw the second one on here before . . . I think I asked the same question but of course, I can't remember.

it's amazing that people can spend the money on that! I would love to just have a couple different tanks, and keep changing what kind of fish are kept in them . . . I think that tank would be TOO much in my house and I would just go work at the aquarium. haha

I wish I had the money to try out a closed ecosystem. Technically you could have a tank so large that it would never need water changes, if it was planted with reeds, loads of roiling surfaces, gravel beds , loads of plants etc. I wonder what size of tank you need before that becomes feasable? Maybe 50,000 gallons?

rjmcbean, i think once the tanks get that big, your best off just building the monster tank and opening it up to the public for showing and charge a small fee

If you read the atricle you find out that he has problems with the tank. The floor above him is absorbing the water. I guess he should have put a water vapor barrier in the roof. Say the floor in the house is weaking (Nice way of saying rotting and the metal frame is rusting above the water line. Do you think that aluminiun would have been a better choose. Other, than that WOW.

If that was me building a tank like that, I'd dig a separate bunker for it, so that it was isolated from the house. Then it wouldn't matter about water damage to the house because it would be in its own building, which I'd make sure was properly constructed to withstand the humidity.

Yes, I'd think about charging visitor admission as well.
